Review

This review is now finished. I could go on and on rechecking the book, but I'm going to look at the next in the series, Lucky 13 instead. The 15th in the series is still ongoing.
Only by reading and rereading can I find any contradictions in a book since the first draft is put away and I immediately start a new 'puzzle'. I am not sure if I have actually solved all the felonies in this novel, but the crime that was meant to be the main one has been solved logically at last and the parallel crimes all had solutions, though following them through would have made the book even longer.
***
Revised chapters are now entitled "episode".
***
It didn't take me long to realize that a re-write would be a good idea.
***
I completed this story on 25th October 2018 . Starting November 29 it's high time to correct the typos and as many other errors as I find. It's a random choice among all 15 books in the series. They all need revision and they can all be found on my basis blog by clicking on the link top right under "Have Faith!".

Ongoing Memo V

July 3. I'm serious about finishing this 'epic', but now on vacation so only have time now and again to attend to progress.
***
June 8. I think I have found a way out of the severe attack of writer's block that has affected me. The only problem is that two trips are on the cards and I'm not sure I can keep up a daily writing schedule. But at least I know what is going to be in Chapter 15!
***
May 28 as I write this. After a break that included a trip to Italy, I am now moving on with the story, but only slowly. Tomorrow I'll have to update my synopsis before moving on. Sending Nigel to Mallorca was a good move and I'm getting into and out of Chapter 14 relatively unscathed (I hope). Please remember that the story is fiction and the characters exist only in my imagination!
***
N.B. Old Memos have been moved to the bottom of this page!

April 29th. I took a break from writing because I was not moving the plot along. I have revised and added to Chapter 12 and will have to rewrite the beginning of the chapter entitled "Nigel" though he will figure extensivley. I'llbe taking another break because of a vacation and a visitor. After that I hope to finish the book. My target is mid-June (this year!) Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt!

Ongoing Memo IV

March 31th. One of the problems of writing a series with many characters running through is that details about them tend to get lost. I suppose it's easier to write a one-off novel with entirely fresh characters, and I plan to try that after finishing this novel; e.g. I had to write a passage into Chapter 5 for that reason. It was not dramatic, but if by any chance you read the novel about the beachhut murders you might remember something I contradicted here. I must admit that despite trying to remember everything, I do forget things about characters. I tried running a databank on them, but it got too wearisome!
***
March 29th. I finally got Chapter 11 finished. At long last we are starting to unravel the crimes, but that does not mean that there won't be more to come...
***
March 23rd. I'm a bit slow writing this, but I got myself back into the writing rhythm by revising Chapter 10 and reposting it. I had hoped to finish the book by April, but won't even try!

Ongoing Memo III

Chapter 9 is now finished. I think it has completed the first part of the book though I cannot promise there will be no more new crimes. One thing leads to another, but it's time to unravel some mysteries! Further comments will be in a new Ongoing Memo.
***
Chapter 9 is about half written but can be read as the events are complete to that point. Slow going at the moment, but not just because I am doing other things! I had to go through the chapters and write myself a synopsis. I should do that all the time, but never seem to. Then I get to the point where I cannot proceed! I also tried to correct misnomers etc and re-posted the first 8 chapters.
***
Chapter 8 was difficult to write and is only a draft, as are all the others.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to inform about characters who appeared in earlier novels in the series without revealing too much. A current case in point is Robert, ex- husband of Cleo.
In fact, I find myself often referring to places and people as if the reader knew them, which he/she may not. I sometimes have to go back and look for characters' names, since I was slothful about making character lists with definitions (but am improving with age - I have a cast list for this book).
I poured over the very first book (which is due for revision and shortening!) to find the name of the previous owner of Delilah's bistro, to no avail. Didn't he merit a name? He's probably in big trouble now so I'll have to either remember the name I gave him if there is one, or have him sell out to someone - who will get a name! ...All the world's a stage....
***
I make no apologies for mixing a few thoughts for the day in with the writing. I tend to discuss things with my characters...
***
To summarize: We now have Formby's and Mr Barclay's murders unsolved and the kitchen schlimazel to work through, which includes the car accident. That can't be all, surely? No. There's Cain Mansfield to sort out, Formby's criminal activities to unravel, and I expect there will be one or two more misdemeanours before long! Oh, and Mrs Peel is not quite kosher, either!

Ongoing memo II

After taking 3 runs at finishing Chapter 6 I am finally there. Sometimes ideas are just waiting to be harvested!
*
Writing is a bit like inventing a tree. You get the trunk growing (the plot); get branches growing out of it (side-plots, red herrings, characters); add leaves (embroider the plot, add character studies, dialogue etc). Balance is important.
*
Once a tree crashed into my loggia railing during a November hurricane. It was still a tender young tree and looked as if it was going to rip out of the ground, so I tied the strongest side branch to the balcony until the tree started to grow the following March. I then took the string away and left the tree to its own devices. It promptly selected one of its branches to balance the rest and has grown that way ever since. I always have the proud feeling that I rescued it!
***
I decided to post my 'rescue' scene after writing it. It's too short as a chapter, but I had fun writing it. I need not tell you that my writing is very tongue in check if not downright satirical and prone to innuendoes.
***
Chapter 5 is now 'in the bag'. Look out for chapter 6 and don't forget: things have to get worse before they get better!
